Honoring a Hero: The Unveiling of the Carrie L. French Memorial Statue in Caldwell, Idaho

On June 5, 2026, the community of Caldwell, Idaho gathered to celebrate the life, service, and legacy of Corporal Carrie L. French with the unveiling of a custom bronze memorial statue. Family members, veterans, community leaders, and residents came together to honor a hometown hero whose courage and sacrifice continue to inspire generations.

Carrie was the first female soldier from Idaho to lose her life in combat during the Global War on Terror. At just 19 years old, she was killed in Iraq while serving her country with honor and dedication. She was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and numerous other military honors.

While Carrie's story is one of remarkable sacrifice, the unveiling was not defined by loss—it was defined by remembrance, gratitude, and community pride.

For Terry Harrell, who served alongside Carrie in Iraq and represented the Caldwell Veterans Council that commissioned the memorial, the project was deeply personal.

"This statue is extremely important to me. She served with me in Iraq," Harrell shared.

The Caldwell Veterans Council envisioned the memorial as something larger than a tribute to one individual. They wanted it to honor the service and sacrifice of women in the military while preserving Carrie's legacy for future generations.

"We wanted this statue to not only represent Carrie, but our women that served who ultimately, like Carrie, gave their life for our freedom," Harrell said.

As a custom bronze statue company, we have the privilege of helping communities preserve the stories that matter most. Creating the Carrie L. French Memorial Statue was more than an art project; it was an opportunity to help ensure that her legacy remains visible for future generations. Long after headlines fade and memories become history, a bronze memorial statue provides a permanent place where people can gather, reflect, learn, and remember.

The dedication and care that went into the project reflected just how meaningful it was to everyone involved. Harrell recalled the many hours spent working alongside our team to ensure every detail accurately captured Carrie's likeness and spirit.

"We spent hours and hours with the artists making sure everything was perfect," he said.

Public memorial statues have a unique ability to bring communities together. They create spaces where stories are shared, conversations begin, and collective pride grows. For many families and communities, memorial monuments become places of healing—not because they erase tragedy, but because they transform remembrance into something tangible, lasting, and hopeful.

Terry Harrell, a fellow Iraq War veteran and Director of the Caldwell Veterans Council, proudly stands with the Carrie L. French Memorial Statue.

The unveiling in Caldwell demonstrated exactly why public art matters. Veterans stood alongside students. Family members stood alongside neighbors. People who knew Carrie personally stood beside those learning her story for the very first time. Together, they celebrated a life that continues to make an impact more than two decades later.

The response from the public has already shown the powerful impact the memorial is having.

"This will draw people from a long ways away," Harrell said. "The word has gone out about what we're doing, and some of the comments we're getting on social media are like, 'Hell yeah! She looks like a stud!' And that's what she was."

He continued, "A 19-year-old young lady that goes out fiercely to serve her country. It makes me and a lot of people really proud that we're able to make this statue."

At Big Statues, we believe every community has a story worth telling. Every town has heroes whose lives deserve to be remembered. Whether honoring a veteran, first responder, athlete, educator, historical figure, or community leader, a custom bronze statue serves as a powerful reminder of the values that shape a community's identity.

The Carrie L. French Memorial Statue now stands as a symbol of courage, service, and sacrifice. More importantly, it stands as a gathering place—a reminder that even in the face of hardship, communities can come together to honor the people who have made a lasting difference.

For Harrell, that impact extends far beyond Carrie herself.

"It's neat that we're able to do this not only for Carrie and her family, but the military community and all those women who served as studs," he said.

We are deeply humbled to have played a role in preserving Carrie's legacy and helping the Caldwell community create a permanent tribute to one of its own. It is projects like these that remind us why memorial statues matter. They connect the past to the future, inspire new generations, and ensure that extraordinary lives are never forgotten.

Every community has a story worth telling. If your city, organization, veterans group, school, or foundation is looking to honor a local hero through a custom bronze statue or memorial monument, Big Statues would be honored to help bring that vision to life!
