How Long Does It Take to Make a Custom Bronze Statue?

Most life-size custom bronze statues take six to twelve months to complete. Learn what happens during design, sculpting, bronze casting, finishing, shipping, and installation.

How Long Does It Take to Make a Custom Bronze Statue?

Most life-size custom bronze statues take approximately six to twelve months from the initial concept to final installation. Smaller or simpler sculptures may take less time, while larger monuments, multiple figures, and highly detailed designs may take longer.

The exact timeline depends on the statue’s size, complexity, approval process, foundry schedule, and installation requirements.

The Bronze Statue Process

1. Planning and Design

The project begins with a consultation about the subject, pose, size, location, budget, and desired completion date.

Photographs, videos, and historical references help the sculptor create an accurate design. Clients may review sketches, digital renderings, or a scale model before full-size sculpting begins.

2. Full-Size Sculpting

The statue is then created at full size, usually in clay. The sculptor develops the face, clothing, posture, expression, and other details by hand.

Clients review the sculpture and approve it before mold making begins.

3. Mold Making and Bronze Casting

A detailed mold is created from the finished sculpture. Wax copies are made, covered in ceramic material, and used in the traditional lost-wax casting process.

Molten bronze is poured into the ceramic molds. Large statues are typically cast in several sections.

4. Finishing and Patina

The bronze pieces are welded together, and the seams are carefully blended.

A patina is then applied to give the statue its final color and character. A protective coating helps preserve the finish.

5. Shipping and Installation

The completed statue is transported to its permanent location.

Installation may require a concrete foundation, pedestal, permits, landscaping, and specialized lifting equipment.

What Can Delay a Statue Project?

Common delays include:

  • Slow client approvals
  • Major design changes
  • Limited reference photographs
  • Large or complicated designs
  • Foundry scheduling
  • Foundation or permit delays

Clients can help keep the project moving by gathering materials early, responding quickly to approvals, and preparing the installation site during production.

When Should You Begin?

For most life-size custom bronze statues, begin planning at least six to twelve months before the desired unveiling date.

Larger or more complex monuments should begin even earlier.
