After spotlighting Legion the Bulldog in Part 1, we’re excited to share the story of Bucky the Buccaneer at East Tennessee State University (ETSU).

Who Is Bucky the Buccaneer?

For ETSU students, alumni, and fans, Bucky is more than a character, he represents courage, adventure, and the fighting spirit of the Buccaneers. Over the years, he’s become an icon on campus, rallying the crowd at athletic events and standing tall as a symbol of school pride.

Creating a bronze statue of Bucky was about capturing that same energy in a lasting, physical form.

The Process of Sculpting Bucky

Turning a mascot into a permanent statue requires more than just artistic skill. It takes research, precision, and a deep understanding of what the mascot means to the community.

Here’s how our team brought Bucky to life:

1. Studying the Character – We started by immersing ourselves in Bucky’s story and design, from historic logos to modern illustrations.
2. Designing the Pose – A statue needs to tell a story without words. We worked closely with ETSU to choose a bold, dynamic stance that captured Bucky’s fearless personality.
3. Sculpting in Clay – Before moving to bronze, every detail — from his pirate’s hat to his determined expression — was carefully shaped in clay.
4. Casting in Bronze – Using traditional foundry techniques, Bucky’s clay form was transformed into a durable bronze sculpture, built to withstand time and weather.

Why Mascot Statues Matter

Mascot statues aren’t just campus art, they are rallying points. Students take photos with them on game day, alumni visit them during homecoming, and families see them as lasting representations of school tradition.
