Tom Green Veteran Memorial Athens, TN

February 12, 2023

The memory of Veteran Tom Green was set in a bronze statue to commemorate his life long commitment to fighting for his country and serving those who also fought. Green, a decorated Marine Corp served two tours of duty in Vietnam, and fighting in the battle of Khe Sanh. He then served as McMinn County’s Veterans Services Officer for over 20 years and even took part in over 6 other veteran service organizations before his passing in October. He spent his life on and off the clock helping any veteran he could any time he was needed. VFW Post 5146 Commander Jim Haney stated, “…I would like to use Tom as an example we can all emulate. He took his job as Veterans Services Officer to the highest level and worked tirelessly to help everyone he could. I would compare his work not to a job, but to a calling…”A ceremony was held to unveil the statue and celebrate the veteran on July 4, 2018. Auxiliary President of the VFW Post 5146 called all Americans to action saying, “We celebrate this day, we honor veterans this day because we know that, without them, there would be no land of the free. Tomorrow, we must continue to honor them. They have given us this chance to live in freedom today and the opportunity to look forward to tomorrow.” He continued stating, “The best way to honor them is to take an active part in maintaining freedom in America. We must teach future generations about what it means to be an American. We must volunteer in our communities, take care of our veterans and their families, vote in elections, and continue to try to make America the very best it can be”.The custom bronze memorial, created by Big Statues, insures that Green’s memory will never be forgotten and he will continue to inspire others to honor veterans for their endless sacrifices.
